- Stow your phone.Turning off your phone and putting it in Do Not Disturb mode can help eliminate the temptation to surf the web at a red light or reply to a text message right away.
- Vow not to multi-task.Anything that occupies your mind or field of vision can be a distraction. Make time for meals or makeup at home so you can focus on the road.
- Don’t be a distraction.When you know family and friends are driving avoid calling or texting them to avoid distracting them.
- Talk to your employer.Answering text messages or answering work calls while driving can be dangerous. Encourage your employer to have a distracted driving policy including waiting to talk to employees until they park safely.
- Keep kids and pets safe.Make sure children are in proper car seats and pets are kept safe in the area at the back of the vehicle. It can also help reduce distractions if pets aren't roaming in the car.
- Set a good example.Parents can model good behavior for their children by demonstrating attentive driving. Avoid texting dinner or calling someone while driving.
- Plan your route before you go.Programming your navigation system while driving takes your eyes off the road. It's best to ask passengers to do this or enter your destination before you leave home.
- Speak up.If you see someone texting or otherwise driving while distracted say something and let them know you're uncomfortable with the behavior. When your child rides in a friend's car encourage them to do the same. It can save lives.
- Set rules of the road.Consider limiting the number of passengers until your teen or new driver gains driving experience.
- Avoiding reaching.If an item falls while driving resist the urge to reach for it.
